Your Privacy and Security

This document is intended to answer the following questions:

The information on this page is subject to change without notice, at any time. The "without notice" bit is because we are not the sort of people who obsessively keep track of who has been looking at a particular page, so we wouldn't know who to tell.

When you look at this web site

We note which parts of this web site you look at, and in what order. If you followed a link from another web site (perhaps a search engine) to get to this web site, we note which page that link was on. Sometimes we can work out what you typed into the search box. We try to use this information to improve this web site.

We also note what kinds of browsers and computers people are using to look at this web site. This helps us make sure this web site works with the equipment real people use when they visit it.

When you look at this web site, you are usually anonymous. There are two exceptions: when you buy something through this web site, and when you have logged in to this web site. We don't use this information ourselves, but we will give it to the police if we think a crime has been committed. (E.g., if someone buys something from us using a stolen credit card, we can tell the police which internet company they were using. The internet company might be able to tell the police who placed the order. Eventually, the cops may be able to track down the criminal.)

When you buy something from us

When you use an order page on this web server, your connection to this web site is automatically encrypted (scrambled). This means that as your order travels over the internet to us, no-one can peek inside and copy your credit card details (or anything else). It also means that the order page can be a bit slower than the rest of the site. Such is the price of security.

We store orders in a database. They are kept there as a permanent record of the orders we have received. All orders are stored in encrypted (scrambled) form. This means that if criminals break in to the database, they will not be able to steal anyone's credit card details (or anything else). (In fact, they shouldn't even be able to do that, because our database is behind a firewall, which is supposed to stop that sort of thing. But we try not to be complacent.)

We use various different companies to fulfill different kinds of orders (eg, we send all our flower orders out to one company, all our teddy bear orders are dealt with by another, and so on). They in turn may give out information contained in the order, if need be (for example, they would give the delivery address to a courier company (and the recipient's name and maybe phone number as well, in case they're not in)).

When you order from us, you must give us your e-mail address. That way, our web server can send you an e-mail to confirm we have got your order. Also, we will e-mail you if there is any problem with your order. If you give us a fake e-mail address, we can't do that. So please don't.

When you order from us, you may give us your phone number, if you choose. If there is a problem with your order and we cannot contact you by e-mail, we will try phoning you.

We will never hand your phone number or e-mail address out to anyone else (except that if someone tries to use a stolen credit card, then we may give the postal address, e-mail address and phone number they gave to the police).

When you order from us, you must give us your name and postal address. This is used to try and confirm that your credit card has not been stolen. We also give your name and address to the company that sends out your order for us because some of them like to send out a receipt of their own.

Also on the order page, you have the opportunity to state that you do not wish to receive any marketing or promotional material. At present we do not send out any marketing or promotional material, either by e-mail or by post. However, the company we use to fulfill your order may wish to send you their own advertising. If you check the box about not wanting to receive such materials then they should not send you any.

There are some web sites with whom we have affiliate agreements. That is, they link to our web site and in return we pay them when someone comes to our web site from their web site and buys something from us. We tell these affiliate web sites how much those people spent (that's how we work out their commission) and we give them an idea of what people are buying ("flowers" when someone buys 12 red roses). We don't give them any other information about the order, or any information about the customer.

When you register at this web site

Registering with this web site is optional, unless you want to use BankNet.

When you register with this web site, your connection to this web site is automatically encrypted (scrambled). This means that as your personal details travel over the internet to us, no-one can peek inside and copy any of the information you register with us.

We also make sure your connection to this web site is encrypted when you log in. This means that no-one can copy your password as it flies over the net to us. (If they could, they could log in as you and access whatever information you have registered with us.) However, you are responsible for keeping your password secret. Writing it down next to your computer may be a bad idea.

We store all registered information in a database. You can update your registered information at any time through this web site (except bank account information). When you change some of your registered information, we will not remember what you changed it from. When you delete some of your registered information, it really is deleted. (This is unlike most e-mail systems, where deleted e-mails can hang round in the background for years.)

All registered information is stored in encrypted (scrambled) form. This means that if criminals break in to the database, they will not be able to steal anyone's credit card details (or anything else). (In fact, they shouldn't even be able to do that, because our database is behind a firewall, which is supposed to stop that sort of thing. But there's nothing wrong with a belt-and-braces approach.)

If you forget your password, you should e-mail <info@mkn.co.uk> and ask for a new one (don't forget to say what your username is). We will choose a new password for you, and e-mail it to the address you gave when you registered (unless you changed it since then). This is to keep things safe from people who phone up pretending to be you.

When you receive your new password, you should change it to something you can remember as soon as possible.

If, when you buy something from us, you are logged in to this web site and you have registered your credit card with us, you can pick your credit card from a list, instead of having to type your credit card details in Yet Again. This web site will also copy your contact details from your registered information. If you have registered a desire not to receive promotional material, that will be noted in your order also. This information will then be processed as if you had just typed it in.

If you have an account with BankNet (Secure Trust Bank) you should know that we (MarketNet) do not tell anyone what your bank account number is (unless we are talking to Secure Trust Bank). You cannot alter the list of accounts which you may see (you cannot see anyone else's bank account, and no-one else can see yours). You should also note that the bank account itself has its own rules relating to privacy; see the BankNet terms and conditions for more details.

Notes on technologies you may have heard about

Cookies

A cookie[1] is basically a ticket which a web site can give to your computer when you look at the web site. Your computer then shows the cookie to the web site whenever it goes there again. A cookie can have an expiry date, in which case it will be deleted at that time. If a cookie doesn't have an expiry date, it gets deleted before you switch your computer off.

The use of cookies on the internet has provoked many concerns,[2][3] most notably due to the behaviour of web advertising companies.[4] Because of this, modern web browsers allow you to throw away some or all cookies as soon as they are received (check your Preferences, probably under the File, Edit, View or Tools menu, to find out what your computer is doing). Unfortunately, some web sites do not work if you do not take their cookies.

This web site does not require you to use cookies. However, this web site will use cookies if you let it, under the following circumstances:

SSL / TLS / public key encryption

SSL stands for the Secure Sockets Layer and was developed by Netscape. Using SSL, your web browser can be sure that:

It can be sure of this because SSL uses public key encryption to make it so. Public key encryption[5] is basically a fancy way of saying what we said with those three bullet points.

Your web browser lets you know when it is using SSL, usually by displaying a solid key or a locked padlock at the bottom of the screen (instead of a broken key or an unlocked padlock).

TLS stands for Transport Layer Security. TLS is essentially the same as SSL, but it has a different name because it is now being developed by the IETF, an internet standards body.

You can use this web site in secure mode at any time, by clicking the [secure connection] link that is near the top of most pages. This web site also switches into secure mode automatically when:

Thus you can be sure that when you fill out a form on this web site, we get the information and no-one else does.

Please note that, because it does not go through the web site, e-mail is not encrypted.

Firewalls

A firewall is a special computer that sits between one or more computers and the rest of the internet. It's job is to keep the bad guys out while letting ordinary people go about their business.

So we have a firewall. It is set up to let people look at our web pages and send us e-mail, but to keep people from changing our web pages or peeking in our database.

There's not much else to say about this.
