Birmingham City was formed by a small group of men from the Bordesley Green Holy Church cricket club in 1875. The club turned professional in 1885 agreeing to pay the players half of all the gate money for each match. They became the very first club to become a Limited Company in 1888, with a share capital of just £650! 1925 saw the first visit of an international team when they played Real Madrid whom they beat 3-0. In 1931 they reached the FA Cup final at Wembley but unfortunately lost 2-1 against opponents West Brom. 1946 was the club's most successful year up to that point, winning the Football League Championship and reaching the semi-final of the of the FA Cup. 1955-56 was also a very successful season, finishing sixth place in Division One and reaching the FA Cup final, losing 3-1 to Manchester City, again at Wembley. In 1960 the club became the first ever British club to play in Europe reaching the Fairs Cup Final but losing to Barcelona 4-1 on aggregate.
In 1970 Trevor Francis made his first appearance for the club, scoring an incredible 133 goals in 328 appearances becoming the club's greatest legend. Nine years later he was sold to Nottingham Forest and was the first player to be sold for more than £1million. A difficult period followed seeing the club gain success one year, and failure the next, demoralising players and fans alike, but in 1991 they reached Wembley for the first time in 35 years for the Leyland Daf Cup Final and came out victorious, and to this day they remain one of the strongest and best-loved clubs in the country.
