Celtic Football Club was formed in November 1887 in St Mary's Church Hall in Calton, with the aim of the club being to help alleviate poverty in Glasgow's East End parishes. Their first game was a friendly against Rangers in May 1888 which they won 5-2.

Celtic reached the final on the Scottish Cup in their very first full season of competition but were beaten by Third Lanark. However, they did win their first cup the same year, the North Eastern Cup, by beating Cowlairs 6-1 in the final. Their first win of the Scottish Cup came in 1892 when they defeated Queen's Park 5-2 at Ibrox Park. In 1907 they achieved the 'double', winning the Scottish Cup and League Championship in the same year - they then went on to do the same the following year. They won the League Cup for the first time in 1956, and managed to retain it memorably in 1957 by beating Rangers 7-1.

1967 was a highlight for the club, winning every competition entered, the Scottish League, Scottish Cup, League Cup, Glasgow Cup and the European Cup. In 1994 the club was reconstituted as a public company, and saw the most successful share-issue in the history of British football with 10,000 fans each investing a minimum of £640, thus contributing £14 million towards the re-financing of the club.
